Any other Therapists who a built a focus around addiction recovery?
My name is Bretten and I am getting ready to open a massage and wellness studio in Provincetown, Ma. called Under the Bodhi Tree. I am a recovering addict and have recently began to specialize in treating clients that are effected by or in recovery for all forms of addiction, specifically Substance Abuse and Alcohol. Just wondering if there is any one else out there who has specialized int this?

I actually haven't heard of anyone but I really think it is a good niche and very needed service for people with addictions. I think it could really help in getting people to feel which is what I think is the reason for most addictions - they don't want to feel.
You should consider writing about setting up such a business for others to learn from.
Figure out how to connect with all of the groups supporting addiction recovery and the people in them. Having gone through it yourself will make you the expert in it. I would read the book "The Psychology of the Body" by Elliott Green if you haven't already. While we don't practice psychology of course it is a great book on how the body and mind work together.
I might have to start a section on that on one of my websites (I like the idea so much!)

The Pavillion, located in nearby Mill Spring NC, and Cooper-Rhyss, here in Rutherford County NC, are recovery facilities that both have massage therapists on staff and they have for years.
My husband is coming up on his 21st birthday of being clean and sober. Congratulations to you for getting it together!

I don't specialize in it. I have been attending Al-Anon for 19 years though. So now you have someone to connect to on this site who understands as few others can. No one has permission to break my Anynonimity except me please. Lois's Story "WHEN LOVE IS NOT ENOUGH" will air on CBS April 25 as a Hall Mark Hall of Fame movie made for TV. I hope you will watch it to understand the family side of addiction. She is the wife of Bill W. founder of Alcoholic Anonymous

Thank you so much Samantha! Yes, I have worked with clients with both physical/emotional abuse as well. Bless you for sticking with that! I found that those clients certainly have a hard time gaining trust and becoming comfortable with someone touching them, but as time and sessions heal, what a release!!! Very rewarding to be a part of that! :)

Julie- I have not heard much on this focus either so I just decided to throw it out there in hopes I would get some feedback. Thanks for yours!! It's always exciting to find a newer niche and this one is so dear to my heart. I live in a town that seems to attract many an individual battling with or in recovery from a variety of addictions. Its a very close knit community, and very small during the off season. I attend Anon groups and was surprised at the size and amount of meeting throughout the week.
I am a writer as well. What a great suggestion on the experience and "how to" of setting up a business. Thank you!
Please do consider adding addiction recovery and massage as part of the recovery process onto your website! Would love to see this focus grow throughout the wellness industry!

Ty- I hope that I not aggravated that nerve with bringing this up! Yes. millions of people suffer from addictions of many kind, or have at least know someone in their life that is suffering, therefore suffering themselves. Addiction is such a scary word for people and one that both addicts themselves and those family members and friends tend to try and hide as not to feel disgraced or embarrassed. Addiction is a serious disease and one that needs much more attention if we are ever going to start to derail its grip on humanity! Thanks for sharing your thoughts a feelings on this subject! And let's say the tradition continues with my siblings. I do know a bit about the relationship between Trauma/Addictions/Alcohol. The frailty and the strength of the human spirit. I have a black belt in Alanon....Champ is coming up on 21 years sober. and he doesn't give one rip about his anonymity...he says everyone knew it when he was a raving drunk so he'd just as soon they all know he's sober, LOL!

Bretten ~ You might also consider contacting the people at National Alliance for Mental Illness (www.nami.org) for some resource information as you develop your practice. They assist and educate the families of people afflicted with substance abuse and mental illness and could offer insight. I know there are chapters all across the country. Best wishes to you! ~m
