CA CMT's certified by CAMTC: the Assembly are moving Bill AB 1822 (Swanson) sponsored by the California Police Chiefs Association
While it may seem repetitive, what the CAMTC is doing is to establish credibility within the California criminal justice community, who, as you may
have noticed, is not thrilled with the profession of massage therapy as there
are a few bad apples who are prostitutes masquerading as massage therapists.
Convincing the local peace officers that we are actually a legitimate profession
has been a challenge. It would really help if all massage therapists in
California who have become certified by the CAMTC would read up on AB1822, the
current Bill before the assembly, which is attempting to to take all authority
away from the CAMTC and establish the local law enforcement as the authority
under which Massage Therapists will be liscensed in the future.
I DO understand and empathize with the amount of time and money that you have already
put into your education and certification , as I had over 1000 hours and had to
do it myself. But until AB1822 is defeated, we are not "home free" - we will
have to do it again.

presently lies. This Bill is sponsored by the California Commission of Chiefs of
Police , and will insure that none of us are able to just get our paper in order
and go to work, but that we must continuously pay fees and jump through hoops
for the local law enforcement who have declared themselves to be capable of
evaluating and approving our massage education. We will also be required to pay
more local fees and once again obtain massage establishments permits even though
we are CAMTC approved. In short, we get to do it all over again unless we all
let our assemblymen and women know that this does not represent us or allow us
in an environment that is laden with prejudice and suspicion.

Just as a note of procedure, it likely isn't very useful to send letters to the appropriations committee...better to spend the time and effort reaching out to and educating one's own assembly-person. I say this because the appropriations committee will only consider matters of appropriations and fiscal impact on the state budget. They are not a policy committee and will not listen to policy issues. I've learned this from listening to past appropriations hearings. If the bill should make it through the assembly, then the next committee that will hear policy is the Senate Business and Professions Committee. It is not too early to start mailing to the Senate B&P, preferably via the archaic medium of real mail (a large stack of letters does have an impact).

Californian Massage Therapists need support now to defeat AB 1822
Explain to these Assemblymembers why you think Massage Therapists should be treated like other health professionals in California.

The bill is being rushed through as an emergency action. "SEC. 12. This act is an
urgency statute necessary for the immediate preservation of the
public peace, health, or safety within the meaning of Article IV of
the Constitution and shall go into immediate effect. The facts
constituting the necessity are:
In order to ensure the public health and safety with regard to the
practice of massage, it is necessary that this act take effect
immediately." This is in the current version.

For years we worked bill after bill to get State Professional recognition. Now it appears to be quickly vanishing.

AB 1822 will again face a committee vote on May 19th. Make your subject "AB 1822 Opposed" so if they don't read them they at least see your position. Be sure to write your Assemblymember if they are on the committee.

Write to Assemblymember Swanson, authtor of AB 1822, to share with him why you feel State Certification is important to our profession and needs to be protected not torn apart. Decades of law enforcement supervision of massage licensing has not removed the unsavory elements who work with or without a license. We have only had State Certification less than a year and it is supposed to be a 7 year experiment. Let the experiment play out to see if encouraging professionalism does more than police surveilance.
Don't blame Sandre Swanson, I am sure he thought it was a good idea. His record shows how concerned he is with human trafficing. But that should not be confused with the need to recognize Massage as a Healthcare profession. Tell him why the bill is a bad idea.
