I have been using Comfort Touch techniques with great success. This involves deep compression and slow holding of an area rather than moving the tissue. My clients calm readily. Those that are verbal tell me it feels good.
How does that work? Also, my dad, is a very new stroke victim. He lost most all use of left side of body. He has gotten about 50% of leg use back, speech is improving, and has all feeling in left arm but no use. What techniques or kinds of therapy would you suggest. I am planning on doing hydro-therapy and putting a patch over the right eye to cause him to strain, the left eye, and activate the right side of the brain?
Check out comforttouch.com Mary Rose has developed a way to work with just about everyone. It really is a series of compresses that warm the muscles and stimulate the nervous system. Another friend is working a stroke patient with excerises. Movement has been gained with the client even though the "massage" started over six months following the stroke. The exercises are occupational therapy and physical therapy type techniques. I have found that a modified type of PNF type stretch and ROM stretches also work with contractions. Never go beyond the client's comfort level and always use gentle guides to assist and give them confidence. Remember to work both agonist and antagonist muscles and finish with a comfortable restretch.
