Hanna Somatic Educators just don't teach somatics exercises.
Most HSE'ers use bodywork and then give their clients a couple of somatics exercises for reinforcement.
In the video below, try the move and get a sense if you or your clients can feel the connections. Then give the hands-on method a whirl.…

One of the many things I love about my work is the opportunity to interact with and treat a very wide variety of conditions. If I dealt with nothing but low back pain all day/every day, I would be bored rather quickly. Women’s health issues have always been a strong part of my practice, including pelvic organ prolapse. I recently came to know Sherry Palm, who heads a wonderful non-profit organization called the Association…

Florida SB 1860, introduced on January 17 by Senator Negron, will remove the right of massage therapists and acupuncturists to bill PIP (Personal Injury Protection) insurance for those who have been injured in auto accidents. I don’t have any statistics regarding how many FL therapists currently file these types of claims, but based on my interactions on social networks, I would estimate that it’s quite a few. I suggest a mass protest is in order. You can find your legislators here. Contact…

These days it's not difficult to find sources for massage therapy (MT) research information. Pop in on FaceBook and many practices have their own page. Several of them post research articles as a way to promote MT and don't mind sharing (like mine). Maybe we should define what a research article is. A research article has been…

As usual, the opinions on my blog are my opinions and not to be construed as the opinions of anyone else.
I haven’t had much to say on the legislative front for a few months…when the legislators go home for the summer, not much is happening; then there tend to be shorter sessions in the fall before they take a break for the holidays and not much happens then, either. Well, the break is over, and how.
I received a press release from the NCBTMB yesterday announcing what amounts…

I’ve had a few meltdowns over e-mail in the past couple of weeks. In spite of my attendance at one of Michael Reynolds‘ brilliant presentations on how to be an e-mail ninja and have a “zero inbox,” I confess I just haven’t gotten there. And I’m wading through a field of spam.
I have a good spam filter on all my email accounts, so basically most of those trashy emails advising you on how to enlarge your anatomy, how to collect the $40 million that the dead person in Nigeria has left…

As MTs we all have unique stories as to what sparked our passion for this career choice. And we all know that passion must be present to enjoy and thrive in such a practice. But most MTs core drive comes from a passion of just helping others, being natural healers, and my drive is the same but it came from being helped, being healed and that makes me only want to do one thing, return that experience. To each and every client I encounter. And it all started when I was 16, I had a hard time…

I have posted this photo in a few other places, including my Facebook Wall and MassageMag.com Blog, but I think that the concept is worth repeating.
I asked the following questions:
1. What do you see?
2. What might be the cause?
3. What, if…

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body and it absorbs everything that you place on it? Did you know that mainstream beauty products are filled with industrial chemicals, like parabens and petroleum? According to the Environmental Working Group (ewg.org), common beauty and body care items contain many chemicals, both natural and synthetic. The manufacturers, by and large, do not test their products for health and safety, so we do not know how much of their chemicals…

“In the practice of Ayurveda we try to bring people back into balance and at the same time let their true nature shine through. The two processes are really the same.”–Deepak Chopra.
Ayurvedic practitioners look at each client as a unique composition of the doshas, which are distinct mind-body types. In Ayurveda, there is no separation between the two. The first dosha is vata, and it is usually the first to become imbalanced and over time will take the others with it. It is…

Living Breckenridge, there is a high level of athleticism displayed by its inhabitants. The mountains afford opportunities to participate in myriad of activities like mountain biking, trail running, and white-water rafting in the summer; and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. While it is healthy to be active and fit, the importance of proper relaxation cannot be overlooked. Think of relaxation as the yin to the yang of activity. Yoga teaches us that there…

On any given day on my FB page, there will be massage therapists who are excitedly reporting an increase in their practice, talking about the big day or big week they just had, or some other joyful news related to their business. On any given day, there will also be someone posting that they’re closing up shop because they can’t make it, and taking a job they don’t really want because they have to have money to survive. And let’s be real, folks…none of us want to just survive. We want to…
