Substance and Sustenance

Substance: what something is made of.  Sustenance: support, maintenance, nourishment.

On a personal level, I have a tendency to think that whatever your character traits, your qualities–your personal substance–is all about, has a lot to do with what you do to sustain that. I don’t intend the word sustenance just in the context of what you’re having for dinner…rather, in the context of what is it you do that sustains not only your body, but…

Health care these days is a system of managed care. Due to the volume of patients needs, health care is inundated with symptoms and complaints that exceed the limited time capacity of health care professionals. It has been my experience, that mainstream health care is…

Teaching the Teachers

I inadvertently insulted a massage school owner yesterday by making a FB post saying that I wasn’t impressed by a school that had only one teacher to teach the entire curriculum, and that I wouldn’t choose such a school, personally. To begin with, I wasn’t speaking of his school when I made the post, and I had no idea that he was teaching his entire program himself, as his website gives a different impression, listing four faculty members. A couple of his satisfied graduates weighed in with…

CAM in a United Front: Why Are We Doing This Ourselves?

At the Highlighting Massage Therapy in CIM Research conference 2010, William Meeker, DC, MPH asks the salient question “Why are we trying to do this by ourselves?”

Moderating the panel “Role of Massage Therapy in Public Health”, Meeker described that CAM professions are all pursuing the same goals: generating research and evidence-based practice, lobbying government for policy change and inclusion in health care, negotiating with the insurance industry for better service…

Adoption and Massage - A Powerful Tool for Attachment and Bonding!

“An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break.” ~Chinese Proverb

The first day of Spring I was handed a twenty pound beautiful, groggy, confused, and sick little girl.  We had very little in common, yet a red thread had drawn us together for some time now.  She began her morning in a village in China.  She left the wonderful foster…

All of those destinations are great places to enjoy our holidays and run out from the worries and stress we feel. Lucky am I given a change to experience those things not all are given an opportunity.

Self-Sabotage, or How I Got Your Clients

There are some great massage therapists in my town (other than the ones who work with me), and this isn’t directed at them. But in every town, and mine is no exception, there are massage therapists who are thriving, and massage therapists who are barely surviving…many of whom eventually give up and go back to doing whatever they used to do, or find some other way to make a living.

Sometimes, a business just doesn’t make it in spite of your best efforts.  Setbacks happen that are…

Movement and Health - Yuanji Dance

http://www.jssm.org/vol9/n1/17/v9n1-17pdf.pdf

In China I visited Lianhuashan, Ezhou, Hubei Sheng. This is a martial arts based retreat based on the Yuanji system handed down by generations of the Zhang family. Besides Gung Fu and Qi Gong there is a movement referred to as dance which to the Westerner appears close to Taiji. There are many moves taught in this system. While in Lianhuashan I spent several mornings…

Are You Using Cupping Therapy Massage In Your Business?

Medical practitioners realised thousand of years ago that stagnation of toxins in the body were the root cause of ailments such as headaches, muscular pain, premature ageing, depression and high blood pressure. Our modern day ailments like stress, tension, anxiety and others can be caused by blockages and toxins that we are generally not aware of...

To treat and get to the source of these ailments; practitioners used revolutionary treatments like acupuncture and cupping therapy.…

American Massage Conference Bats 1000

spent the weekend with over 1000 massage students and therapists, plus all the great vendors and support staff in Atlanta this weekend at the inaugural American Massage Conference. I’d have to say they definitely batted 1000! A good time was had by all!

There were just too many good moments to talk about them all, so some of my personal highlights:

Teaching my exam prep class Friday and ethics on Saturday, great… Continue

Civil Discourse

Civil discourse, according to Wikipedia, is engagement in conversation intended to enhance understanding.

I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, when it comes to that. The good took  place recently at the MAAP meeting I attended with the folks at the NCBTMB. It was a great meeting of intelligent people who were all invited to participate in a discussion about continuing education, and not an ugly word was spoken.

The good was exemplified again…

My Greatest Massage Teachers Have Been Horses. Lesson 1 - Muscles Talk

I was nine years into my massage career when I decided to expand my practice and study equine massage.  I was looking to relocate to Colorado to be closer to my family and I was growing tired of missing summer days spent in a dark room lit with only a dim candle.  I was ready for a change, but I didn’t want to steer too far away from one of my true passions – massage therapy.
An idea that had been suggested to me years earlier suddenly seemed to hold the answer: equine massage. …
