An office with employees means you must talk to an insurance agent about worker's compensation insurance. Add that into rent, utilities and supplies. Wages? How are you organizing it? employees vs independent contractors.

My concern for you would be in setting up a studio BEFORE you have the clientele to warrant it. To me, the cost of running a massage business with other therapists in a studio, is directly related to your clientele and how much you are making for a session. You will need to be bringing in enough money to cover rent, utilities (only you can answer what that would be in your area), laundry, paying other therapists (this alone takes thought in which is better...having an employee or contract work), insurance costs, and then money on top of all that so you can make a profit.

 

Might it not be better to start small and build up as your clientele demands require it?

Hi Lisa,

I figure I'm at least 3 years away to starting up a business of my own. I might get a bigger place next year because I have no room at the place I'm at to offer couple's massage and that hurts business. Not a lot of places around me offer couple's massage or if they do they make the clients pay extra. I just wanted to get a feel of what expenses I should expect on a monthly basis. I don't want to start a place until I know for a fact I can cover bills if a therapist were to flake out on me. Let's be honest there are schools out that that push people through promising them the world and therapists that really don't want to work but want the full time pay. I have my goal in mind just need to remember baby steps. The city I'm in now I love so I know I'm staying put just need to move yet again to a bigger location.

There is no "set" start up costs for a massage therapist/ practice - it all differs with how you set your business up, how the people that work with you are set up or brought in, what supplies and equipment you use or need, what your current state and city boards are and are with licensing, etc. You can look up small businesses + start up costs on search engines to find several different types of workable forms - and just pick the best to suit your needs. Just be sure to research enough on your own and in your own time, plan out and make a business plan, etc. before you jump into anything or sign on the doted line in any business ventures! It's always good to know approx.ly how much you're doing to need plus another thousand or two just in case, esp.ly if you don't have the recommended like what is it 3-5 years worth of savings/other income during the start up and estbl.ment time it might take a new business.
