I've been a medical massage therapist for 3 years now, using mostly my forearms and elbows and now I am starting to have major shoulder problems. I realize a larg part of it is my technique, not keeping my elbow directly below my shoulder. I am realizing I have to change my technique or find a new form of massage to learn that doesn't require so much deep tissue. I have also always wanted toe ventually incorporate more of an emotionally based massage modality so in a way I am excited about this change. Any suggestions on therapies that give an emotional release and involve more light touch?

I dont do this type of massage.  But I got one.  It would take speciel training. And you dont work on a table. But it would not agrivate your forearms and elbows.  Its a way cool massage and kinda unique.

Here is a medical massage system that requires no forearm or elbow work and is highly effective.  I've studied their headache protocal.  Again way cool and very unique.

CranioSacral Therapy!!  www.upledger.com

And look into Val Guin's Forearm Dance massage.

This one I thought about doing years ago.  And its emotionally based.

Thanks Gordon, that one looks interesting but a little out of my comfort zone I think...

Yes, CranioSacral is one I am seriously considering and I've seen some of that video for the forearm dance, those are good reminders thank you!

With CST you won't get into specific emotional stuff until the 3rd core class, SomatoEmotional Release 1.  But you will do good work for people before you get to that point!

Good luck!!

I do a technique called SMRT or Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique.  It has helped me continue to massage for 20 years with no thumb, hand, elbow, or shoulder issues, and while it is based in medical massage, it has some lovely side effects.  One of the things I say when I teach SMRT is that knowing the anatomy will help you know what you are trying release or help realign, but when you are having the conversation that SMRT requires you have with the client's body, you will almost hear the client's body saying "thank you! thank you!"  I have clients who will stop mid-sentence as I begin to use this technique, and when I am done, they begin speaking right where they left off, without realizing they stopped.  What I am doing is very subtle and meant to not only release the tissues in the area, but also release the emotional chemicals trapped on that tissue, and the stagnant energy in the meridians.  I am always amused by clients who begin snoring as soon as I use this technique, and stop as soon as I go back to other modalities.  I love it because it is all encompassing.  I can challenge my brain by using my anatomical knowledge, but the technique forces me to be open to the moments when that knowledge simply will not take us to where we want to go.  In those moments I adjust and listen only to the messages from the client's body.  I love it because it effects so many tissues and systems of the body simultaneously, making my work deeper and yet so much easier.  I love it because it provides the client with a physical rebalancing, as well as an emotional and energetic clearing. And I love it because the client's love, love, love it.

Dawn, I love the idea of the technique you have created!  I will definitely be watching your YouTube videos and reading more about it online.  It sounds exactly like something I'd love to do, and something my clients will love as well.  I already have conversations with clients' bodies as a result of the CranioSacral training I've had, so that should help me a lot while learning about your technique.

Hi Therese - I am in the process of putting more youtube videos up.  It's on my list, and has been for like 6 weeks.  I am hoping to do it by this weekend.  And the SMRT works amazingly well with CranioSacral.  I use the 2 together all the time.

That is fantastic, Dawn!  I'll look for them after this weekend.  I'm excited to learn about it!
