Why is it that almost everywhere I look in Suffolk and Nassau Counties there are new business's popping up offering Reflexology and Massage Therapy and not a licensed to be seen. I am in the process of filing a complaint with the NYS Dept. of Education. I will not stop there…I will also be writing our Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr., and Senator Kenneth Lavalle to introduce a bill for stricter rules or AT THE LEAST ENFORCE the current laws. Unless unfair, illegal competition is halted, legal massage therapy facilities like mine may eventually be rubbed out. Why isn't the NYS Dept. of Education sufficiently enforcing the laws? This renders them useless. Lack of enforcement also creates side effects that leave NYS vulnerable to a class-action lawsuit. If Albany's apathy provides incentive to illegal commerce practices---thus causing the bankruptcy of licensed citizens--- there clearly could be governmental culpability. NYS happily cashes my checks for all the licensing it deems necessary regarding this public health issue. But now it's time to prove such fees are not just a money-grab. Let's stop lawbreakers who jeopardize our incomes and endanger patient safety with untrained amateurs.
I am looking for NYS Licensed Massage Therapist ( or anyone that wants to help) in helping me bring this problem to the forefront.
You can contact me thru this site or call my business.
P.S. I've been in business for 14 years and I realize that my clients would not go to these unscrupulous place's…that is not the point. The point is that these people are a public health hazard and they should be shut down immediately!

And you are right Grace, the purpose of "licensure" is to ensurethe protection of the public, to protect customers from 'harm'. So it does make me wonder why MTs have to jump through all the hoops to become licensed and maintain licensure for the "protection of the public" when no one enforces legitimacy of the massage therapy businesses and existing laws in these cases. Maybe it's time to talk "revenue generating income" when enforcing existing laws to the legislators of cash-strapped counties -- well, unless it's "too expensive" to enforce the laws as it is...
I don't know. The states and cities just want money. They are non licensed, but they pay taxes. Its all about money. Here in Anchorage its the same thing but different. We have to have a city license. Its the same one they give the prostitutes. I have to show proof of schooling.. you have to have over 700 hours and so on.. All the prostitutes do is show a fake deploma from a fake school in California, give a $100 or $200 and they recieve their massage license. So even the illegal people are licensed here.. Its a joke.
Grace
I may be able to recommend some volunteers. Can you share with me a concrete plan you may have today of approaching/tackling this complicated issue (I say complicated due to several conflicting constituencies involved)? Publicly if you are comfortable or please feel free to message me privately. Thanks
