Introducing myself....been performing sportsmassage for 30+ years. My clientele include high school and college athletes; some Boston-based pros, olympians and weekend warriors. I employ trigger point therapy to help athletes avoid injuries as well as heal from them more quickly than by employing just traditional methods like stim and ice. I work with severeal elite college team, etc. Looking forward to the dialogue.

Like Earl stated you should contact the team or organization first. I am also interested in sports massage field. I have contacted a few local teams to inquire about assistance needed on a part-time basis to get some experience and was asked to come in for some interviews. So that could be a start for you also. Just contact whomever it is you would like to work with and see if they need some assistance from a massage therapist.

Thanks, Heather. It can require time and persistence to get your foot in the door. My marketing/networking efforts working with a local running club created my opportunity to become a massage therapist to the Univ. of Michigan track teams.

Thanks for the heads-up in getting to do massage for sports teams. I already do massages for long distance bike riders. I was not sure on how to start with sports teams. With your timely and kind advice, I can now move ahead with this in my area.

What level of teams are you hoping to work with? For high school or college teams, I would advise you to contact the coaches directly with a letter of introduction with an offer for a free 30-minute session with you, to show what you can provide to their teams. For the college teams, I would also strongly advise you to contact the assistant coaches and athletic trainers, as they often are better referrals to you (the head coaches are focused on the "big picture").
For professional teams, you should look up the team's athletic trainer and conditioning coach for introduction letters. They are the ones who will be responsible for an athlete's rehabilitation and performance, and more likely to refer to a massage therapist.
