ELAP Work Group Members Announced

Anne Williams of ABMP has confirmed to me today the members of the group that are working on the Entry-Level Analysis Project that I have been blogging about for the past few weeks. Since the secrecy surrounding this project has been my main complaint, about it, I will share that information here. The members are:

Cynthia Ribeiro, President of AMTA (National), educator, and school owner.

Tom Lochhaas, University-level educator, author, editor with 24 years experience in…

Can you be overly flexiable for your own good?

How do you loosen the painfully tight muscles of your ultra flexible clients? I often find releasing them a challenge in adaptability.

Top Secret Standards Project: No News is NOT Good News

I’ve been on vacation…I took a deliberate ten-day break from the Internet and from all the politics of massage while I was enjoying my annual sojourn in Ireland. I didn’t visit any Internet cafes. I didn’t read the paper and I didn’t watch the news. I left my cell phone at home, too. It was quite refreshing and restorative to be unplugged for that period of time, but now it’s back to the grind. From the look of things, it would seem that the powers that be are enforcing a news black-out as…

Why do we have more problems arriving at terminology in "massage" than Chiropractic

A big difference between massage and chiropractic is that chiropractic began as a developed system by one man, Daniel David Palmer. "I am not the first person to replace subluxated vertebrae, but I do claim to be the first person to replace displaced vertebrae by using the spinous and transverse processes as levers...and to develop the philosophy and science of chiropractic…

Ever need to find a new MT for yourself?

Over the years, many of the MTs I've traded with have moved out of town or retired. Before I knew it, I was down to one and although I've made many professional friendships online, neglected to put in the effort to connect with others locally. I am grateful for the remaining MT in my network, but in my experience receiving regular massage works best when you have several MTs to call upon. Can you imagine what the…

Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique (SMRT)

SMRT: Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique

Instructor: Dawn Lewis

Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique is a series of gentle contractions that allow therapists to release muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue. This allows natural realignment of joints, the painless resolution of trigger points, and the removal of adhesions, which restores and enhances homeostasis of the area being worked.

• SMRT has a balancing effect on the nervous system.

• SMRT is…

A Betrayal of Trust

Any time one of the major organizations in the massage field tries to fire up a project that will “advance the profession”, I get awfully suspicious. When a group of them get together to do something on the big scale, I go on full nuclear alert. That’s the case right now with a dubious education standards project introduced by ABMP in September 2011 at the Leadership Summit in St. Louis, which I detailed in my previous post, Behind Closed Doors.

As the title of that blog suggests,…

Curiosity and the Magic Wand

I believe curiosity is one of the strongest assets that make a therapist successful. But, curiosity on the part of my patients can reap even bigger outcomes.

I have an acquaintance who is a mental health therapist. In her office she keeps a toy magic wand. Among others things, she will often give it to a client, often a child, and ask them if they could do anything, what would they do to fix things. Not an uncommon approach in mental health, and it often gives the client freedom to…

Behind Closed Doors

From the title, you might think this blog is about The Client List, the trashy new show on the Lifetime Channel that gives massage therapy a black eye. No such luck; the event I am referring to is the upcoming Leadership Summit #2, set to take place next week in Chicago.

The first Leadership Summit (to clarify: there were summits in 2003-04 before AFMTE and FSMTB existed) took place last September in St. Louis, with the executive directors and chairs of…
