Texas Hold 'Em

Texas has a few pieces of massage legislation in the offing. And while I don’t think most of it is as detrimental to the profession on the whole as the recent amendments to Utah’s regulations, I can’t say I’m crazy about it. I have a fundamental problem with regulations that are not clearly defined, and this seems to be one of those cases. Their language just plain ticks me off, as well.…

The Importance of Proper Sanitation for Hot Stone Massage

I am consistently shocked to discover that there are still many massage therapists offering massage with hot stones that are not following proper (or ANY) sanitation procedure.

As a consumer of hot stone massage modalities, you should be greatly concerned with the sanitation procedures that your therapist utilizes for their stones and equipment. In 2009, this…

The Value of Massage by Andrew Wolfe,LMP

Health care is on the minds of most people, whether they have it, need it, or don't have the right policy due to financial infeasibility, to acquire or maintain it. Unfortunately when it comes to health, if you don't invest in it now, you pay for it later, as the investment of our bodies seem to yield higher rates of health issue returns to our lives as we age. As it stands now, preventative health is not recognized under most health insurance policies unless it comes… Continue

Cold and Flu season; Increase your immunity with massage by Andrew Wole,LMP

Harvest is upon us again. It is a time to gather and take in the bounty of our labors. It is also a time of reflection, a time to look within and assess our needs; to take inventory and appreciate what we have. In the medical community and with the reminders in the media, we realize it is also cold and flu season, a time when we can deplete our immune system. When this happens not just the individual suffers but all those around them do also.

As a society we have been informed of… Continue

Water-natures natural healing remedy by Andrew Wolfe,LMP

Have you ever been told by your massage therapist after receiving a massage to drink plenty of water? You may ask yourself, ''Why is this"?

The body is mostly composed of fluids. The skin holds the fluids in as well as holding other structures together - like a body suit. Fluids in the body consist of lymph, blood, cerebrospinal fluid as well as other fluids as carriers to help in the transportation, distribution and elimination process. It thereby supports the ability to heal, restore,… Continue

Clarifying massage and insurance coverage by Andrew Wolfe,LMP

It has come to my attention the need for more education about massage therapy benefits and the coverage under insurance.

First, providership is essential for the practitioner, whom is qualified by credentialing and training.

Second, is the need to look at the individual (patient’s) plan, provision and policy of the insured, whether it be an individual or group plan. Just because a provider is listed as preferred on your insurance plan does not mean you have… Continue

Tips for Massage Therapists to Provide Massage Therapy to Special Needs Clients

Massage therapists often work with clients who have physical and mental disabilities, and they should be prepared to identify potential contraindications in order to best provide massage therapy to this population. Often, special needs clients may not disclose medical ailments or their need for accommodation until they arrive for the appointment, so it is up to massage therapists to be well educated about situations when it is, and when it is not appropriate to provide massage therapy… Continue

Massage Winter Wonders

Well, here we are preparing for the Holidays. Whether you observe the Holidays or not the fact remains IT IS COLD OUTSIDE. I really enjoy this time of the year, the leaves change and fall, the snow falls and you feel a slight chill in the air, the only thing I'm not a fan of is the sloppy weather and reckless drivers or better yet the unskilled driver.

As we prepare for the season you notice that you have drier skin, your lips begin to chap, your muscles are tighter than…

Being Paralyzed and a Neuromuscular Therapist

Many questions are asked when we see a wheelchair role into our offices.

Do I start moving things out of the way, how are they going to get on my table,

will the client fall off, what modality can I use, will I hurt them?

Let me start by giving a little perspective from a wheelchair (chair) user’s

point of view.

Making our customers feel comfortable is always our biggest obstacle, making a big deal out of…

Georgia Massage Therapy Continuing Education Requirements

The perks of continuing education are multifold; not only do they encourage licensed professionals to be more mindful of changes and happenings within their industry, they also ensure that these professionals remain up-to-date on key knowledge and facts. Moreover, most professional organizations require such ongoing learning to occur throughout the year. The field of massage therapy is no different. Continuing education is more than just encouraging licensed massage therapists to sharpen their… Continue

Great workshop in Providence, RI

The whole Dalton Gang is in Providence this weekend for a workshop. Having a great time... just a few workshops left in 2010. Next stop Seattle, then on to Richmond, Tucson and the grand finale of the Blue Collar Tour in Austin, TX. Been a very busy 2010 workshop tour. Slowing it down a little in 2011 with only 4 strategically located workshops here in the U.S. and adding a second workshop in Costa Rica... Spring and again in the fall. Will announce locations and dates soon.… Continue

Real Healthcare Reform

If you are educated and knowledgable about the benefits of massage therapy, then this message is for you! While our nation is in the midst of reforming health care, it is time that we care about health and that health care actually cares. Massage therapy needs to be incorporated into our healthcare system and covered by insurance in all instances instead of just vehicular accidents or slip and fall. This is our nation's opportunity to educate the general public about body awareness for self and… Continue

Help! My Client is an Energy Vamp

We've all heard, seen and most importantly felt an energy drain from working with certain clients. The drain can wipe us out for hours and sometimes days.We often attribute it to some shortcomming of our own or some issue our client has. But what if it's intentional. I mean Really Intentional. I'm not talking about the creepy ones...The ones that make us bristle long before they get to our table. I mean the subtle ones. Sometimes they're men sometimes they're women. They come in looking and… Continue

Massage Therapy Programs Experience Rise in Enrollment

U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment opportunities for massage therapists are expected to rise by 20% by 2016. Coupled with the fact that 45% of women and 21% of men reported receiving a massage within the last five years, the projected rise in demand for massage therapist certainly seems to make sense.
