There have recently been some threads on facebook and other forums that question whether massage therapy research is needed and one of the opinions that spring from them is along the following:
"I don't need research because I see results in my practice. My work, my intuition and the education I have received is enough".
I can relate to this to some extent. In fact, I could nearly say that at one stage it would be very easy for me to slip into this mode of thinking. Most of us…

From my
last post that created quite a stir, I have a new concept of research and the importance of it but now I see that my last post was more that I was and still am research illiterate! I was able to attend a great conference here in Seattle (OK I couldn't not go since it was a block away from my office) put on by the Massage Therapy Foundation called Highlighting
Massage Therapy in Complementary…

People often avoid visiting loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. They
avoid it because they assume that the visit won’t be remembered so what
difference does it make? Today on NPR I heard a great
interview with Justin Feinstein, a graduate student in neuropsychology at the University of Iowa. He reported on a fascinating…

I try to keep abreast of what’s going on in the political scene of massage–and to update my readers on that. I am amazed at the amount of people who apparently don’t care. I hear things like “I’m just too busy doing massage to keep up with that stuff.”
Well, here’s a reality check. There are still plenty of places in the US where we are treated like prostitutes or some other category of second-class citizen. Right this moment in Chicago, the zoning commission is…

An interesting subject came up in a recent interview for a Dutch massage magazine. After speaking for a while, the interviewer said to me "so it sounds like you expect therapists to rearrange their home life and work life. That sounds like a lot of effort - do you think they'll be willing to do that?" I found that to be a surprising question, but I realized that a lot of therapists probably are thinking the same thing: wow, it takes a lot of effort and thought to prevent injury.
Well,…

First off, I would like to thank my wife, Ivy, for letting me hijack her blog post this week!
I recently read the Massage & Bodywork article, “Massage Franchises: The Impact on the Profession” (twice, in fact). Even though I felt the article was fairly slanted, I will withhold my feelings about massage franchises for the purposes of this discussion. As a marketer, I just feel there is so much more to say on how franchises will affect the market of massage therapy, and what…

One of the most important pieces of building a successful massage practice is to connect with your clients in a way that builds trust, comfort, and healing. Creating an atmosphere of trust and healing requires that we be good listeners both in the literal sense, as well as with our hands. This starts with the first encounter and is crucial to develop during the first session.
Rather then rushing into the first massage, I suggest taking between 30-45 minutes to do a consultation with…

Squid Ink: What About My Happy Ending?
Thursday, February 18, 2010
By Jason Knight, CMT, HHP, Aromatherapist
It isn’t news that the massage and bodywork industry is a difficult field to be in if you’re male, especially when you only account for
about 15% of the population of therapists. Whether straight or gay,…

Within the past week, the Iowa winter has officially gotten to me. I happen to believe I tolerate winter as well as anyone else in the Hawkeye State. February typically brings the promise of warmer days, melting snow, and glimpses of spring. With incessant snow showers in the forecast, not a day over thirty degrees, an eight foot drift in my backyard, and getting our vehicle pulled out of the snow twice in one night; winter has worn out its…

Having a website is one of the most effective external marketing methods that one can use in developing a massage practice. Marketing online offers several advantages over other forms of advertising. These include:
1. Low Cost - The annual cost of developing and maintaining a website can be as low as $250. Compare this to other forms of advertising such as running ads in phonebooks, local papers, and magazines. Print ads will often run over $100 a month.
2. Volume of People…

7 Ways to Build a Massage Practice
1. Get Known by the Public. Reaching out with helping hands to the public is one sure fire way to build a massage practice. This can occur in a variety of ways such as attending health fairs, and giving massages at summer festivals and local health food stores. I have used all of these methods in the past, and it was common for me to get 3-5 new customers each time I did this.
2. Give Some Freebies. Offering freebies is a great way to get…
