Note: For the past few years I have done a series of reports on the financial status of the non-profit organizations that represent the massage therapy profession. I obtain this information from Guidestar, a financial information clearinghouse for non-profits. The organizations can provide their Form 990 (Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax) to Guidestar, and if they don’t, the IRS does it for them. I will state for…

I’ve seen some ups and downs since joining the massage profession about 15 years ago, but never, in all that time, have I been as disgusted and dismayed with one of our organizations as I am today. I feel as if I have a vested interest in all of them, so I have the right to complain—and to call on them for help.
The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork was the only path to licensing in many regulated states for a lot of years. Their exams are written…

NCBTMB is holding their Board of Directors elections, and I must say, I think the Election Committee is massaging the bylaws of the organization. One of the open Board positions is for the public member.
According to the bylaws, a public member shall not be a certificant, or a practitioner of massage therapy and/or bodywork within three years of election, and shall have no material financial interest in the field of massage therapy and/or bodywork.
I am curious as to how the…

Gobsmacked: adjective: shocked, astounded, astonished.
Gobsmacked is my favorite word of late, and unfortunately, myself and many other people in the massage world have been gobsmacked recently, to learn that a colleague who was admired and trusted has let us down. I am addressing this because I have had a very public relationship with this person. I have appeared on a blog she owns for several months, which incidentally she refuses to remove my picture from,…

Please consult your physician before starting exercise programs especially if you are injured.
The Quad muscle is on the front of your thigh. It crosses over both the hip and the knee, providing stability and motion to extend the knee and bend the hip forward.
The Quad stretch is really good for people with…

How often do you reach out to the people that you care about? Do you sometimes fall behind connecting with people who are important to you because you are so busy with your business and your life?
Do you have a system in place to help remind you to take the time to develop and strengthen your relationships?

Have you heard of the 80/20 principle?
It was initially presented by Vilfredo Pareto in the late 1800's when he noticed that 80% of the land in Italy was controlled by 20% of the population. It has since become known as the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 Rule...
The amazing thing was that once he presented his theory, many other researchers, scientist and statisticians discovered that this distribution applies in so many different…

The 6 "W's" of Your Ideal Clients
How well do you know your ideal client?
Do you even have an ideal client or are you just taking anyone who will schedule with you?
Let me address the second question first? If you do not have an ideal client, how do you know you are doing your best work? If you are taking everybody that will work with you, there's a good chance that some of them do not allow you to do your best work, worst yet, some of them…

Champ and I attended the World Massage Festival this past week, held on the Queen Mary. This grand old boat is permanently docked in Long Beach, CA. On our last day there, we got a glimpse of the captain giving a tour to the grandchildren of the original captain of the ship. The ship itself is a beautiful historical remnant from times gone by, and we really enjoyed our stay.
Once again, the Festival itself was a blast. I look forward to attending every year! We arrived on Saturday and…

I would like to share this blog post because this simple exercise can help you age gracefully and improve your balance. I would like to support massage therapists to be painfree in their practice and learn tools to prolong their careers. This is also a great way to give your clients balance and integrate changes. …

I am curious on how other massage therapists get along who are working while pregnant. I am 5 months pregnant, and feel great. I hope to work for as long as I can. I am worried I will loose clients when I take maternity leave, I am also worried about how I am going to be feeling in a few months, I would like to carry on working despite how big I will be. Any thoughts on this?

I recently had the opportunity to meet with Steve Kirin, the new CEO of the NCBTMB. This is the interview I did with him.
1. You were just appointed CEO in May, but you’ve been on board for a year and a half. What do you see as the major challenges facing the NCBTMB at this time?…

I was very shocked to find that Robert King has passed away. I met him at the AMTA National in Texas in 1989, when he was Prez. A wonderful man who was very kind and a great motivator! I ran into him at other AMTA events in California and took a weekend seminar from him. He always remember that I was the 7000th person to join the AMTA. The massage world has lost another icon and he will be missed.
Godspeed Robert.
