Practical Complete

Alright, first hands-on practical done and done! After a horrible weekend, I got a personal crash course in quick centering and leaving my emotional baggage outside the massage room. This was the very first time I have felt uncomfortable going into class, let alone it being my practical. Thank goodness for breathing, eucalyptus oil, Jason Mraz, and the awesome support of my classmates and teachers.

Chair Massage

I just started contacting employers to see about performing chair massage on their employees. I always get the question, what is the name of your business? Do I need to actually set up a business to sound legite? I am just doing this as freelance work on the side to see if I can build it up into something.

It seems replies to blog posts are limited to a certain amount of words, I'll ramble on over here  ;)

This post is in reply to:  The Future of our Profession

Well, now that I'm on a tear, let me further this.  Perhaps it's off topic, but seems relevant to me.

IMHO, there are two issues here: …

Good day to all!  My name is Peter and I'm new to this organization.  I look forward to being here and seeing what everyone has to offer.  Plan on making contributions whenever I feel I have something constructive to offer.

I've already added a group "Polarity" which is my specialty.  If you also a Polarity practitioner or are interested in Polarity, come on in and throw in you two cents.

Be well!

1 month!

I can't believe it's been 1 month since I first started my MT program. The things I've learned and how GOOD I feel astounds me.

The decision to start was a bit of a whim: based on word-of-mouth from a coworker who graduated from the school mixed with a bit of "could be fun!" attitude and a dash of "Aw, what the hell! Let's do it!".

I haven't felt this personally fulfilled in a long time. I almost wish I had done this earlier, but I know that good, life-changing, decisions come…

The Corporate Takeover of Massage

Perhaps you have seen some of the many articles about the impact of for-profit schools on people and on taxpayers.  The New York Times just wrote another one recently.

Not that long ago, massage therapy was loosely regulated in most states.  Industry leaders, composed of massage school owners, the AMTA (American Massage Therapy Associates), COMTA (the school accrediting company) and NCBTMB (the testing company) joined forces to hire lobbyists to create regulations.  Essentially they…

Pay in Massage Therapy: What's for Real?

I just finished reading AMTA’s 2011 Massage Profession Research Report. It’s 66 pages of information that was created from several surveys conducted by AMTA and supplemented by government statistics.

The report covers many topics, including consumer demographics, information about massage schools and their students, where massage is fitting into the general scheme of health care in the US, and statistics on the practitioners… Continue

Massage Therapy Employee vs Subcontractor

My company is looking to update our policies of employment and compensation of massage therapists.  We are a partnership that has two receptionists and 4 massage therapists who rotate days and times.  Of the four therapists, one prefers we take out the taxes and the other three do not.

Our policy from the beginning has been...we are providing a table, sheets, creams, advertising for the therapists and they receive 50% of each massage we give them.  The rest is used for rent of space,…

Discussion on Trigger points with Leon Chaitow

There is a long, but good, discussion thread batting ideas around about trigger points over on Leon Chaitow's Facebook page. The thread is getting reasonably long and tricky to find so I thought I'd post a section here relating to muscle spindles and stretch.

LC: but question, when palpating an area housing a trigger point, is 'what is the orientation of spindles, so that they can be stretched longitudinally?' The main origin and insertion…

The Future of Our Profession

I feel that moving the profession in the direction of rehab work would be bad for society, and good for the handful of people capable and desirous of doing medical rehabilitation.  Why would it be bad for society?  Because of the loss of affordable wellness massage, and all the jobs that go along with that.  The growing availability of affordable wellness massage is a huge boon in these troubled times. It's a boon both for the general…

Report from Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards Meeting

This past weekend, I attended the annual FARB conference in New Orleans.  FARB, the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards was formed in 1974. Members come together for the sharing of information; public boards of all types are welcome to join, as are industry supporters such as testing companies that provide exams to the membership and the law firms that represent the Boards.  The… Continue

Tips for Massage Therapists on Avoiding Massage Burnout and Career Fatigue

It is an exciting journey for massage therapists to go to and graduate from school, pass licensing exams, and start working. But for some massage therapists, work can become overwhelming over time and they may experience massage "burnout". This can cause some therapists to abandon their career due to fatigue and frustration. While this is infrequent, it is important to adopt some healthy habits in order to stay well and love your career year after year! While massage therapists want to work…

I am new to the Massage Bodywork World

Hi

My name is Andrea and I wanted to introduce myself. I am a Massage Therapist student ready to graduate in April. I hope to continue my education in Engery work and infant massage. I am so happy to find sometihing in my life that I love as much as God and my family. I love making people happy, relaxed and centered.

I would welcome any feedback about what's next in my career. What should I do as soon as I pass my National Certification? Where should I look for clients? and…
