"Weighty Issues"

During discussions here, I've met a lot of people who seem to have added a few pounds here and there. Of course, this is an epidemic. We all, at one time or another, have some extra weight that suddenly appears out of nowhere! That darn dryer is shrinking clothes again! One too many glasses of wine or a pint over the limit. Extra slice of Chicago style pizza anyone? GUILTY! I lost 80 pounds through sheer will and determination. I love to cook, I love to eat, I love food and family dinners, BBQs... you get the picture. I want this group to talk about it. Share your frustrations, gain ideas from others (not lbs), get healthy recipes, new ideas for work outs, anything that is a "Weighty Issue" for you. Please help me. I continuously need the motivation and inspiration to stay healthy. I know there are others out there too.

I had my physical on Thursday of last week. Have not received my lab work results as yet. Nothing was said about my weight. That is the Navy hospital for you. Changed my paps to once every 2 years now and mammograms to once every year. They are more concerned with Breast Cancer now than Uterian Cancer. Interesting I say. Received new drugs for the bronchitis which they are now calling Asthma. So who knows. I am feeling much better than I was last Thursday.

Agreed. I am healthy. I had a full "preventative" appointment that ran up all my blood work among other things. Everything is well within range of a woman my age/height with genetic back ground kicked in for good measure. So, why then did my doc inform me that I still need to lose those pesky 20 lbs? I originally said, "what does she know?" I think I'm heading back in that direction.

I find that if you are not 100% committed to weight loss, it ain;t gonna happen. Sometimes you need to just take a break and stop obsessing about losing weight. Get a new perspective.I always use Oprah as an example. How many times has she lost weight only to regain ot all back and then some? She went about it all wrong. It is not an all or nothing thing. Either she is thin or fat. How about in between? Find a weight you can comfortably stay at without too much struggle. As we get older sorry to say but the number will go up. And cheat once in a while and don't get caught up in your guilt trip. Remember the goal is to be healthy not to be stick skinny.

I am overweight but I am still healthy. I eat right when I can and don't beat myself up when I don't. I do the best I can most of the time and that is good enough.

I am good about trying to eat a healthy diet most of the time. My problem is the motivation to do the exercise. I am good about my stretching. I do that almost daily. But getting outside and doing the walking I need to do is a fight.

Marissa...i'm with you. i've been having a real hard time as of lately to get myself motivated.

So, this is very difficult for me.... I can not seem to find any motivation to do what I need to do! I know I still have all my original reasons for being healthy, but I can't draw from that right now. I can't seem to figure it out! All I want to do is be lazy and eat what I want. It's rather discouraging. Anyone else having any similar issues?

Marissa my favorite meal is breakfast no matter what time of the day I eat it. I read just yesterday that the best diet food is grapefruit. So this morning I had some.

So, this is probably going to be one of those "duh" statements, but I like it! We do "brinner" a lot (breakfast for dinner) and I always go overboard with the food. So, I discovered that if you use a small fry pan to make your omelette it is extremely hard to put too much cheese, ham, etc. inside. Plus, you only use one egg. All perfect portion sizes, especially if you're having toast or what not!

No purging allowed! This is all about healthy moderation. It is the only way weight loss works. It took years to put it on and it will take some time to take it off. I think people may be getting the wrong impression on why this group is here. It is a support network. We want to be healthy! Not a size 2! (I think I would blow away in the wind if I were a size 2) If people can come here and be inspired by others who are having the same issues, then we met our goal. If we can make at least one significant lifestyle change such as more exercise or portion control or eating healthier, we met our goal. If through all of this we lose weight... ROCK ON! For the "weekly weigh in", if you want to participate, cool, if not, no problem. I like my scale. I like knowing where I am day to day, because it helps me stay on track. And I'm using the weigh in as a public record to keep me motivated. Thank you all for your input and support. Lets get healthy, my friends.

I posted this in the weigh in discussion group earlier... Though it may be topical.. Don..
Dear Weigh in group
Can I suggest using body composition as the yard stick of your success. Weigh does not mean anything.. It has always bugged me when those shows have people weigh themselves.. In the end it means nothing.. Body composition on the other hand gives you a very useful trackable baseline. You can go out anbuy a body comp scale ($60-$500) Or a body comp measuring machine ($100 Omron maked one) Or do As I do and go to a local gym that has a unit (always go back to the same unit, they are calebrated diffirently machine to machine). My gym does it for free.. Some gyms will charge a nominal charge. What you are interested in is your % body fat. My wife had a friend stay with us for a couple of weeks. SHe is a former swimsuit model from NY. One day she said to me "wow my clothes are tight I am going to have to go on a diet" I said "heh why don't we do a body comp test on you. Now, a health woman shoud be between 18% and 23%. In fact, 18% is considered borderline sick. Woman need the layer of fat to help with amongst other things hormone synthesis.. Many woman with body fat readings below 18% have amenorea.. Her body fat reading was 18%. I said to her, "your cloths are to small" If she had looked at her weight on a scale (and taken the tight feeling of ther cloths) as that starting point for her weight loss then any exercise she did would actually have increasd her weight on the scale. Her responce would have been (indeed had been in th e past) to restrict her caloric intake. And I gather from her in the past she even purged.. To try to drop weight... She bought bigger cloths and accepted her weight as it is.
Body Comp (%body fat) will give you a number to work with and it does not change if you are wearing army boots and a sweatshirt. Which is,Of course what I like to wear when I am weighing in :)..
