"Weighty Issues"

During discussions here, I've met a lot of people who seem to have added a few pounds here and there. Of course, this is an epidemic. We all, at one time or another, have some extra weight that suddenly appears out of nowhere! That darn dryer is shrinking clothes again! One too many glasses of wine or a pint over the limit. Extra slice of Chicago style pizza anyone? GUILTY! I lost 80 pounds through sheer will and determination. I love to cook, I love to eat, I love food and family dinners, BBQs... you get the picture. I want this group to talk about it. Share your frustrations, gain ideas from others (not lbs), get healthy recipes, new ideas for work outs, anything that is a "Weighty Issue" for you. Please help me. I continuously need the motivation and inspiration to stay healthy. I know there are others out there too.

pat i'm not sure my imagination is THAT good to fool my cravings. :)

but i agree on the weighing in. however....i think it's important to weight yourself on a regular basis...just not obsess over it. the reason i say that is because it is very easy to gain 10 lbs without even realizing it. you need some bench mark. those tight jeans will still fit with 10 extra pounds albeit tighter. the tape measuing is great. i used to do that weekly when i was on an actual regiment.

I used to read a blog written by a guy who lost over 100 pounds and kept it off. His trick was to imagine the food he craved covered in maggots and crawling with flys and roaches, He said it didn't take long for him to be repulsed by the food he once loved so much. By the same token he imagined himself eating healthy foods and enjoying every moment and feeling strong and satisfied. It worked for him so it is worth a try I guess!

I have to say, last night my will power got flushed down the loo! All I could think of was a greasy cheeseburger from Wendys. I caved and today all I can think of is, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Just wanted to say that I do not weigh myself. I do not think a number on a scale is really the best way to judge weight loss. I use a tape measure and a favorite pair of "tight" jeans to judge. Weight fluctuates up and down many times a day. Many times I had gotten on a scale and was dismayed to see the number on the scale did not change, it may have 2 hours later but I didn't see that. It would discourage me. Weighing yourself once a month is better I think if at all. I would take my measurements every week and look for inch loss and try those tight jeans on once a week. Once the tight ones fit, get a smaller size (come on you know we all have them in the closet). Once they fit go down another size. You will get there eventually with a lot less drama. I say throw the scale out the window! Just don't hurt anyone ;)

Dear Marissa, Rosemary and group.
Thank you for listening to some of the information I have posted. And Marissa I appreciate you changing the name of your group.
Rosemary, here is an abstract entitled:

Leptin: a pivotal regulator of human energy homeostasis

The identification of the hormone leptin by Friedman et al (1) in 1994 has proved to be a seminal observation in biomedical science. The discovery that a circulating protein secreted almost exclusively by adipocytes could regulate body weight through its effects on food intake and energy expenditure represented a remarkable breakthrough in our understanding of the molecular components of the systems involved in energy homeostasis. In this article, we describe how the identification of humans with mutations in the gene encoding leptin and the characterization of the associated clinical phenotype of congenital leptin deficiency, which includes hyperphagia, severe obesity, hypogonadism, and impaired immunity, has provided insights into the role of leptin-responsive pathways in the regulation of eating behavior, intermediary metabolism, and the onset of puberty. We and others have also been able to demonstrate that leptin signaling plays a critical role in the regulation of reproductive and immune function in humans, which places leptin at the center of the complex networks that coordinate changes in nutritional state with many diverse aspects of mammalian biology.
In short, Friedman, Farooqi and O'Rahilly are talking about a Gene that regulates, amongst other things, how much we eat, when we eat, the speed we eat, the weight we retain, the amount of exercise we participate in and on and on it goes... THe encouraging news is that they have Identified the gene.. And they can test for it.. Now it'spossible for a family to get tested and identify genetic predisposition.. Think of that chubby little kid (as I was) who becomes traumatized by everybody from teachers to loved ones who dont understand that you are on a genetic pathway.. That does not get you off the hook (put down the chocolate bar ) from practising moderation and participating in a healthy lifestyle.. You must!! What it does do is finally point to the fact that you are not a lazy, unmotivated person if you are a person of size.. That it is not ok to discriminate. It is not OK to beat up on a fatty.. No more than it is OK to beat up on people who are Black, short or have blue eyes.
Yours,
Don Solomon, RMT (Vancouver, B.C., Canada)

Hey all! I am going to rename the "MT Biggest Loser" discussion. It will now be called "Weekly Weigh In". Come and join the discussion and support each other! Saturday morning, weigh in first thing, nude, and then let us all know what you gained or lost. You might want to put your clothes back on before getting on the computer though. It will help us account for ourselves (those with the motivation to go for it right now) and allow us to cheer each other on!
